Duffus men's 2nd team maintained their unbeaten record this season but only just after a closely fought 4½ - 4½ draw at St Andrews last Thursday (11 June).
1st couple Giff Mentiply and Graeme Doig secured 2½ points taking 2 points from St Andrews 1sts following a marathon two sets, the second of which the Duffus pair won on a tie break. They then dropped a set against St Andrews 2nds although they showed their determination by fighting back to take the first set 7-5 after being behind 5-2 and surprisingly struggled against the opposition's 3rd couple but scraped home 6-4, 7-5.
2nd couple Dan Cookson and Alan Doig started the evening with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 victory over St Andrews 3rds but lost both sets to their 1sts.
Pressure was on Dan and Alan near the end of the match when, with the overall match score tied at 4-4, they took on St Andrews 2nd pair and lost the 1st set 6-3; with a victory essential for Duffus in the 2nd set if the unbeaten run was to be preserved; Dan and Alan fought hard to secure the set 7-5.
Duffus fielded two young players at 3rd couple and Lewis Baird and Conor McAndrew certainly played their part. In the 1st round they managed a share of the points with the strong St Andrews 2nd pair with that ½ point proving to be invaluable at the end of the evening.
Lewis and Conor lost to St Andrews 1sts and came near to triumphing over their 3rd couple but narrowly lost the 2nd set after a tie break.
Promotion for Duffus men's 2nds is now a distinct possibility but is by now means certain.
Thursday 18 June involves an away match to Kinross who are also unbeaten in the league, followed by two home matches.
